Until May 2024, Toedscruel ex had never been seen as a card which had actual gameplay utility—let alone one around which a deck that could genuinely threaten the top-tier Pokémon TCG metagame staples could be built. However, following US player Ray Chen’s success with the Toedscruel/Teal Mask Ogerpon ex deck at the Portland Regionals in May and the Pokémon North America International Championships (NAIC), Toedscruel ex has now clearly been shown to be a viable choice in tournament play in the right hands.

About Toedscruel ex (Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] 322/190)

Toedscruel ex is a card with notable capabilities offensively as well as defensively. For just two Grass Energy cards, its Colony Rush attack hits for 80 damage with 40 more tacked on for each of the player’s Benched Pokémon with a Grass Energy card attached to it. In addition, its Ability of Protective Mycelium lives up to its name by shielding those same Benched Pokémon from all additional effects of attacks.

The version of Toedscruel ex from Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] comes in the rarity of Shiny Secret Rare (SSR), so named because every card of that rarity depicts the featured Pokémon in its Shiny form. The image’s background includes sparkles and stars; a reference to the visual effect that can be seen in the Pokémon video games when a Shiny Pokémon is sent into combat.
