The Unorthodox Yellow Vegapunk Deck Has Been Climbing the Metagame Ranks

A Leader card which can't attack might sound strange—but that's not a problem at all.

Following the releases of Royal Blood [OP-10] and the Anime 25th Collection [EB-02] and the ONE PIECE Card Game metagame shifts which those sets caused, the Yellow Vegapunk deck went from being an afterthought to one which has been gaining traction in tournament play.

Strategy

Although the deck’s titular Leader card from 500 Years in the Future [OP-07] can’t attack, its Leader effect more than compensates for this. Vegapunk enables the player to either play an Egghead card with a cost of 5 or less or add that same card face-up to the top of the player’s Life cards. Consistently doing so makes it much easier for the player to keep the deck’s Leader card protected.

A pair of Event cards function as important early-game draw engines: these cards are He Possesses the World’s Most Brilliant Mind from 500 Years in the Future [OP-07] and Dereshi! from Emperors in the New World [OP-09]; both have a Trigger effect that enables the player to draw an additional card. To maintain board control, the Nami card from Two Legends [OP-08] and the Monkey D. Luffy card from 500 Years in the Future [OP-07] can be used to pick up instant KO’s on opposing low-cost Character cards. Finally, after the player’s Life cards have been depleted to 2 or less, the Portgas D. Ace card from The Three Brothers [ST-13] can be brought in; it’s the deck’s main late-game attacker and finisher.

Any of the deck’s Character cards of the Egghead type can be prioritized when mulliganing.

The toughest matchup for the Yellow Vegapunk deck is the Black/Yellow Luffy deck because if the opponent using that deck has gotten the setup right, that deck can effectively shut down the Yellow Vegapunk deck’s main attackers. For counterplay, the Charlotte Katakuri card from Pillars of Strength [OP-03] can be used as that card sends an opposing Character card to the Life area and thus disrupt the Black/Yellow Luffy deck’s general strategy.

Price

Buying every card in the Yellow Vegapunk deck costs at least 11,750 JPY (~US$81).
