Topps Releases 2 Special Cards in Honor of Pope Leo XIV’s Election, Over 133,000 Copies Sold in 4 Days
Only available from 8 to 11 May 2025, the cards set a Topps franchise record among all cards not related to sports.
On 8 May 2025, Cardinal Robert Prevost was elected as the 267th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. The first American to assume the papacy, Prevost chose to take on the papal name of “Pope Leo XIV”.
In honor of the milestone, Topps released two special collectible cards depicting the new Pope. The cards were only available for purchase from 8 to 11 May; each card sold for US$8.99.
The rarer of the two versions was the “White Smoke” iteration featuring a background showing the titular white smoke symbolizing the election of a new Pope. This version was restricted to just 267 copies to reflect Pope Leo XIV’s status as the 267th Pope.
Over the four-day span, more than 133,000 copies of the two versions were sold. This figure set a Topps franchise record among all cards not related to sports.
