This card features Giovanni not as the head of Team Rocket, but instead in his role as a Gym Leader—a side of him typically shown less commonly throughout the Pokémon franchise. This is shown by the fact that Giovanni and Team Rocket’s Nidoking ex are shown in combat in the Viridian Gym. Team Rocket’s Nidoking ex can be seen attacking an off-screen opponent with its King Impact attack.

Since Giovanni is primarily known as the leader of Team Rocket, cards such as this one carry a certain level of novelty, especially since the fact that Giovanni is the Viridian Gym Leader was presented as a major plot twist in the original Pokémon Red and Blue video games. This connection to the original video games also brings with it an inherent level of nostalgia, especially among those who have been into Pokémon since Gen 1.
