Among the four Yu-Gi-Oh TCG cards which were recently banned from tournament play outside Japan and Asia-Pacific, the singular ban which was met with the most approval from the community was that placed upon Knightmare Gryphon. It had become clear that the card was now obviously overpowered in the current metagame.

About Knightmare Gryphon (Flames of Destruction FLOD-JP048)

Prior to its ban, Knightmare Gryphon was primarily used in the Maliss deck. By playing Knightmare Gryphon, the player could use it to recycle Maliss <C> GWC-06 without having to use Maliss <Q> White Binder. This would in turn allow the player to use Maliss <C> GWC-06 for extension. Following this, the player could then bring A Bao A Qu, the Lightless Shadow into play by using Knightmare Gryphon before discarding a card to get Knightmare Gryphon back. As such, Knightmare Gryphon was banned for making it too easy for the player to have a complete setup.

The rarest and most valuable version of this card is the Ultimate Rare iteration from Flames of Destruction. Knightmare Gryphon is also related to Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall; its armor and color scheme match those of Mekk-Knight Purple Nightfall. Both cards also have the same ATK of 2500.
