In a bid to combat the escalating issue of scalping, Pokémon Center Singapore has implemented a new policy: effective immediately, all Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) products will have their outer plastic wrap removed at the point of sale. This measure aims to deter resellers by diminishing the perceived value of unopened products, making it challenging for secondary buyers to verify the authenticity and untampered condition of items without the original seal.

While this approach is novel for an official Pokémon outlet outside Japan, it’s noteworthy that in Japan, removing shrink wrap from TCG products before sale has been a common practice for years. This method effectively curtails scalping by ensuring that products purchased directly from authorized retailers are in their original, unused condition, thereby discouraging unauthorized reselling.

For the majority of fans who purchase TCG products to enjoy the experience of opening packs and collecting cards, this change will have minimal impact. However, collectors who prefer to keep products sealed as part of their collection may find this policy affects their purchasing habits. As scalping continues to be a concern in the collectibles market, it’s plausible that other official Pokémon channels worldwide might adopt similar strategies to protect genuine fans and maintain product integrity.

This initiative underscores Pokémon Center Singapore’s commitment to ensuring fair access to products for all enthusiasts, fostering a more equitable environment within the Pokémon community.​
