Among the Pokémon fan community, Shadow Rider Calyrex is best known for its extreme prowess in the Pokémon video games. The Psychic/Ghost-type fused form of Legendary Pokémon duo Calyrex and Spectrier, Shadow Rider Calyrex is a Pokémon so exceptionally powerful in the video games that it’s among very few Pokémon which has even been banned from the Uber tier—a tier of Pokémon which are already at such a level of power that they’re typically prohibited from use in player versus player (PvP) mode.

While nowhere near its video game counterpart in power level, the Shadow Ride Calyrex VMAX card from eighth-generation Pokémon TCG set Chilling Reign is nonetheless an impressive pull in its own right.

The Full Art illustration shown on this card depicts Shadow Rider Calyrex in its Dynamaxed form, towering over the town of Freezington in the Crown Tundra of the Galar region. Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX cuts an imposing, ominous figure enhanced by the unique clouds of Dynamax energy around its head as well as the glow of this same energy surrounding its body—blue instead of the usual red because Calyrex uses its own power to Dynamax instead of drawing it from Eternatus.

Shadow Rider Calyrex VMAX has an Ability that specifically alludes to Spectrier’s Pokédex entry from Gen 8 video game Pokémon Sword. The Pokédex entry states that Spectrier’s kicks are able to separate one’s soul from body; it’s for this reason that its Ability is named “Underworld Door”. Fans who are well-versed with the in-universe lore will likely appreciate this reference.
