Although it’s true that Eevee and all eight of its evolutions are immensely popular among the Pokémon fanbase in general, there’s no question that one Pokémon among the group stands alone as by far the biggest fan favorite: Dark-type Eeveelution Umbreon.

Introduced during Pokémon’s second generation alongside its Psychic-type counterpart Espeon, Umbreon almost immediately rocketed to the top of the popularity charts and has remained there seven generations and more than 25 years later.

One measure of how adored by the Pokémon fandom Umbreon remains to this day can be seen in the fact that more than any other Eeveelution’s cards, Pokémon TCG cards that feature the Moonlight Pokémon typically far and away outvalue those of Eevee as well as Umbreon’s seven fellow Eeveelutions. Some Umbreon cards today rank as among the most iconic Pokémon TCG cards ever released.

Now, let’s take a trip through the generations and find out what was the standout Umbreon card of each respective era.

The Best Umbreon Pokémon Cards You Can Buy (And Their Current Prices)

1. Gen 2: Umbreon (Skyridge H30/H32) (PSA 10 Price: ~US$5,760)

Rarity: RH

Cards from Skyridge, the last English set of the Pokémon TCG’s second generation as well as the Wizards of the Coast era which spanned the English Gens 1 and 2, carry immense value because they were never reprinted due to licensing issues. As such, it’s no surprise that a never-reprinted Umbreon card from Skyridge ranks as one of the most valuable Pokémon TCG cards of all time.

The card’s illustration depicts the Dark-type Eeveelution out in an open field with the full moon in clear view, the moonlight shining down on Umbreon. (This will be, as one might expect, a common theme throughout this article.) The flavor text, taken from the Pokédex entry of Pokémon Crystal, alludes to how Umbreon’s ring-shaped body markings glow on the night of a full moon—a visual element further brought out by the card’s holofoil. This same holofoil background makes the starlit sky and the brilliant full moon in the card’s imagery appear even more luminous, adding major aesthetic appeal and value to a card which already only exists in very scarce quantities.

2. Gen 3: Umbreon ☆ (PLAY Promotional cards 026/PLAY) (PSA 10 Price: ~US$4,482)

For many years, Umbreon ☆ ranked as the most coveted Eeveelution card of all time. A promotional card which depicted Umbreon’s Shiny form, Umbreon ☆ was only obtainable by accumulating 70,000 EXP—the maximum possible amount—from the Pokémon Players’ Club which ran from 2003 to 2006. It was therefore the most difficult to obtain among all Pokémon Players’ Club promotional cards.

The fact that the Pokémon Players’ Club was discontinued in 2006 further adds to this card’s value; since it was only obtainable by those with the maximum amount of EXP, only a very limited number of people ever got their hands on this card during its original run. In addition, cards featuring Pokémon in their Shiny forms almost always get an additional value boost; this is no different in the case of Umbreon ☆. Capping it all off is the dynamic illustration designed to make it seem as though Umbreon ☆ is breaking out of the illustration’s frame.

3. Gen 4: Umbreon (L-P Promotional Cards 054/L-P) (PSA 10 Price: ~US$1,555)

Not to be confused with the aforementioned Pokémon Players’ Club, the Pokémon Daisuki Club continues to be in operation and has been since 2004. In 2010, a promotional Umbreon card was one of two—the other aptly being an Espeon card—distributed as a Special Rank prize to club members who had accumulated at least 7,200 Action Points (AP). The card’s notable value, once again, stems from the fact that it was only available to a rare few who had fulfilled the criteria and for just a limited time.

Umbreon’s Poké-Power of Cloud-Covered Moon is directly referred to in the card’s illustration—in the background there is indeed a cloud-covered full moon. Once again, Umbreon’s body markings are shown aglow on a moonlit night; the holofoil again illuminates these lit-up body markings as well as the stars in the background. On top of all of that, Umbreon’s Evoblast attack actually encourages those who play the game to collect as many Eeveelution cards as possible—it has a base damage of 50 but adds 10 more for each Eeveelution card which the player has in play.

4. Gen 5: Umbreon (Dark Explorers 60/108) (PSA 10 Price: ~US$817)

Pokémon TCG Best Umbreon Cards

Card Number: 082/078

Rarity: U (Staff Exclusive)

PSA 10 Price: ~US$817

Where To Buy: SNKRDUNK (Japanese version, non-staff exclusive)

On the surface, the Umbreon card originally from fifth-generation English set Dark Explorers might seem relatively unremarkable. However, the particular reprint of the card shown here—one which is exclusively in English—was only distributed to staff members at the 2012-2013 Spring Regional Championship tournaments held in the United States and Canada on 13-14 April 2013.

Just like the version of this card which tournament players received as a participation prize, this staff-only Umbreon card came in a special type of holofoil known as “Crosshatch Holofoil”. Like the players’ version, the staff version had the Regional Championship tournament on the right side of the card. The staff-only iteration then took it a step further by the word “STAFF” in all-caps on the card’s left side. Due to its scarcity, the card’s value climbed to such an extent that it now easily outvalues the promotional reprint of the card which was released in November 2012.

5. Gen 6: Umbreon ex (Awakening Psychic King [XY10] 082/078) (PSA 10 Price: ~US$1,178)

Pokémon TCG Best Umbreon Cards

Card Number: 082/078

Rarity: SR

PSA 10 Price: ~US$1,178

A Super Rare (SR) card depicting the Pokémon-ex form of Umbreon ended up becoming one of the biggest hits of Awakening Psychic King [XY10]. The only Umbreon ex card of the revived Pokémon-ex series of Gens 5 and 6 became as valuable as it did largely on the strength of its spectacular Full Art illustration—one which shows Umbreon ex in front of a torrid-looking background exuding cosmic vibes.

Although there’s no full moon in this card’s illustration, it’s nonetheless implied that there is one because Umbreon ex’s body markings are shown lit up once again. In fact, this effect extends to the entirety of Umbreon ex’s body—Umbreon ex is outlined in gold; it’s implied to be glowing in the moonlight just like many of the other Umbreon cards shown here. Umbreon ex is also shown with a menacing look on its face while its tail and paws are shown extending beyond the borders of the card—implying that the card itself can’t contain Umbreon ex’s sheer power.

6. Gen 7: Umbreon GX (Collection Moon [SM1M] 069/060) (PSA 10 Price: ~US$602)

Rarity: HR

PSA 10 Price: ~US$602

There’s truly no more appropriate set for the Moonlight Pokémon to be in than the one literally named “Collection Moon”. When Gen 7 introduced Pokémon-GX to the Pokémon TCG, one of the standouts of Collection Moon [SM1M], half of a dual set alongside Collection Sun [SM1S], was (as everyone expected) the Umbreon GX card. It would go on to be the first of two times when Umbreon featured as a Pokémon-GX—but the only one where it had the spotlight to itself; its other such appearance was as half of a TAG TEAM card alongside Darkrai.

Like many other cards of the Hyper Rare (HR) rarity, this Umbreon GX card is covered in rainbow holofoil. Though lacking its signature color scheme of black with yellow rings, this Umbreon GX card is no less impressive for it. Its sideways glance gives it an impression of both quizzicality and arrogance at the same time—traits which the Pokémon fandom often associates with Umbreon. It’s a clear example of a case when simplicity made the best illustration. Though it would later be re-released as a promotional card, the promo never ended up reaching the value that this card did.

7. Gen 8: Umbreon VMAX (Evolving Skies 215/203) (PSA 10 Price: ~US$1,975)

Yes, it’s THAT card. We know that some of you scrolled to the Gen 8 section immediately—and understandably so.

What can be said about “Moonbreon” that hasn’t already been said? Ever since its earth-shattering release in 2021, it’s not merely the most iconic Umbreon, Eeveelution, or Gen 8 card; to many, it’s a genuine contender for the title of “greatest Pokémon TCG card of all time”. Viewing a mere image of this Umbreon VMAX card doesn’t truly capture its greatness; this card featuring a Dynamaxed Umbreon has to be seen in person. Its stunning illustration, eye-catching art style, narrative depth, and overall depiction of one of the fandom’s favorite Pokémon make this card the pinnacle of all Umbreon cards—and so much more beyond that.

Interestingly, for years after its initial release, conventional wisdom held that the Japanese version from Eevee Heroes [S6a] would always significantly outvalue its English counterpart from Evolving Skies due to the unique texture of the card. While true for a long time, the English version has skyrocketed in value over the past half-year and recently surpassed the price tag of the Japanese version for the very first time. Nonetheless, no matter the language it’s in, there can be absolutely no debate that Moonbreon is and will forever be one of the Pokémon TCG’s true “Holy Grails”.

8. Gen 9: Umbreon Master Ball Mirror (Terastal Festival ex [SV8a] 092/187) (PSA 10 Price: ~US$1,617)

Terastal Festival ex [SV8a], a Pokémon TCG set centered around Eevee and its eight evolutions, revived the Master Ball Mirror print which hadn’t been seen since Pokémon Card 151 [SV2a]. Cards featuring this Master Ball Mirror print were exceptionally rare; so much so that many of them even surpassed the set’s Special Art Rare (SAR) cards in value. Eevee and all eight of its evolutions featured on Master Ball Mirror reprints of existing cards, and (of course) the Umbreon Master Ball Mirror card ended up as the top pick of them all.

A Master Ball Mirror reprint of a card originally from Ruler of the Black Flame [SV3], this card saw all eyes drawn to it almost as soon as it was launched, and unsurprisingly so. The card’s Master Ball print on a “cracked ice” background on its lower half was a massive pickup because so many were after this mega-rare version of the most popular Eeveelution. The illustration further elevates the card’s value; it depicts Umbreon giving a sideways look outside a window at night with (yes, of course) a full moon peeking out way in the background with its light gently gleaming onto Umbreon’s back.

Of course, these cards are just the highlights of Umbreon’s storied Pokémon TCG history. Why not take an even deeper dive and browse the selection of Umbreon cards on the SNKRDUNK app? Spanning a wide range of generations and rarities, we’re sure there’s a TCG iteration of the Pokémon fandom’s favorite Eeveelution that you’ll love.
