[Pokémon TCG] Cleffa (Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] 255/190) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
The modern-day adaptation of a classic has itself become a staple of several decks.
In the Pokémon TCG metagame, a Cleffa card all the way back from 2000—the first-ever second-generation set Gold, Silver, to a New World…—ranks as one of the most iconic of all time and was a staple of countless decks of its era. Its only attack of Eeeeeeek dealt no damage, yet completely warped the meta by allowing the player to shuffle the player’s hand into the deck before drawing seven cards.
More recently, Creatures Inc. paid homage to that card by releasing a Cleffa card in Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] which was very clearly based on the Gen 2 Cleffa card—and the Gen 9 version has itself become a key piece in several decks.
About Cleffa (Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a] 255/190)
Cleffa’s only attack is Grasping Draw, which doesn’t require any Energy cards at all to be used. It allows the player to draw cards from the deck until the player has 7 cards in hand. While clearly a tribute to the Gold, Silver, to a New World… Cleffa, this card nevertheless established a niche of its own in this way. Ideally, this card would be played as early as possible in order for the player to get the jump on the opponent by loading up the hand with important cards.
Since Cleffa doesn’t require any Energy cards to be used, it’s an extremely versatile card. While most commonly seen in the Regidrago VSTAR deck, there’s also a Charizard ex deck variant which makes use of the Fairy-type Pokémon. Cleffa is also often included in several less commonly-used decks such as the Espathra ex/Xatu and Pidgeot decks.
This card features Cleffa in its Shiny form; this factor elevates its value. Like the other Shiny Pokémon cards in Shiny Treasure ex [SV4a], this card has the Shiny-exclusive rarity of S as well. The background of the card’s illustration has a pattern of stars and sparkles across it; this refers to the visual effect from the Pokémon video games which shows up when a Shiny Pokémon is brought into combat; this reference to the video games is likely to impress those who are well-versed with finer details such as that. Finally, the fact that it references a card from more than two decades ago plays to the nostalgia factor and thus further drives up demand for the card.
