Pokémon TCG Haxorus

The release of Night Wanderer [SV6a], and thus the Haxorus card in it, was a major step in turning the Regidrago VSTAR deck from a gimmicky off-meta pick to the undisputed Best Deck in Format (BDIF). This was because of the additional option with which it provided the Regidrago VSTAR deck against a deck which had previously posed one of the Pokémon TCG metagame’s major threats.

About Haxorus (Night Wanderer [SV6a] 046/064)

The main advantage of including Haxorus in a Regidrago VSTAR deck is its Bring Down the Axe attack which serves as counterplay against the Lugia VSTAR deck. Bring Down the Axe picks up an auto-KO against any opposing Active Pokémon with one or more Special Energy cards attached. The Lugia VSTAR deck is primarily dependent on Special Energy cards as part of its overall strategy.

Haxorus disrupts this and, if absent of any options for mitigation, could potentially leave the Lugia VSTAR deck in an almost unplayable spot; its main attackers could easily be taken out almost as soon as they’ve been set up. Haxorus is thus also a viable pick against decks which use the Double Turbo Energy card from Star Birth [S9].

An interesting point of note about this card is that its flavor text alludes to Bring Down the Axe; the flavor text mentions how Haxorus’ tusks are its main weapon in combat and that they’re sharp enough to slice through a metal transmission tower with just one strike. This is why Bring Down the Axe has the name and effect that it does—and though a minor factor, it’s nevertheless one which might impress the fans who are deeply interested in Pokémon’s in-universe lore.

Release Details

The English version of this card is card 046/064 from Shrouded Fable [SFA].

Due to its relatively low rarity, a Haxorus (Night Wanderer [SV6a] 046/064) card isn’t expensive at all—a copy carries a price tag of just 240 JPY (~US$1.53).
