As the protagonist of the first generation’s Pokémon Red and Blue video games which kickstarted the entire Pokémon franchise, Red holds an iconic place within the Pokémon canon. As such, every Pokémon TCG which has featured him has gone on to be a megahit. The seventh-generation promotional card Red’s Pikachu is certainly no exception.

About Red’s Pikachu (SM-P Promotional Cards 270/SM-P)

This card’s limited run is one of the main contributors to its high value. It was only available at any Pokémon Center or the Pokémon Center’s online store by way of the Pokémon Center 20th Anniversary Campaign. The campaign, as was implied by its name, was held to honor the 20th anniversary of the opening of the first-ever Pokémon Center in 1998. It began on 25 August 2018 and ran for as long as stocks lasted. To obtain this promotional Red’s Pikachu card, all a buyer would have to do was purchase five booster packs in a single transaction while the campaign was still active.

On a related note, the fact that this card was a commemorative card for a major Pokémon milestone further adds to its value. Further boosts come from the presence of Red, whose appearance plays to the nostalgia factor—especially to those who have been Pokémon fans since day one—as well as Pikachu since it’s the face of the Pokémon franchise. Red’s Pikachu is also his most powerful Pokémon in the video games—most memorably shown when the player challenges him as the final boss battle of the second-generation Pokémon Gold and Silver video games and their Gen 4 remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver.
