Launched in 2021 to honor the 25th anniversary of the Pokémon TCG, the Promo Card Pack 25th Anniversary Edition [S8a-P] brought classic cards into the eighth generation. Among these cards was one which almost instantly became iconic upon its initial 1998 release way back in the first generation: ________’s Pikachu.

The primary factor behind the demand and value surrounding this card is nostalgia. The original version of this card was one of the first promotional cards in the history of the Pokémon TCG when it was distributed with copies of the All Card Calendar. Just like the new version, the OG was also a commemorative card; it was launched in conjunction with the Pokémon TCG’s second anniversary. It’s for that same reason that the illustration of this card as well as its nickname of “Happy Birthday, Pikachu” are what they are because the card was created for the “birthday” of the Pokémon TCG.

On top of that, when this card was first released, it proved to be highly controversial due to its gameplay effect which allowed an additional 50 damage to be dealt if it was the player’s birthday. Due to the cumbersome process required to verify this at official tournaments, the card was soon banned from tournament play. It was the first card to ever be banned from official gameplay and therefore holds a unique place in Pokémon TCG history.

Additionally, the false rumor that circulated following its initial 1998 launch. It was claimed that this card’s print run was highly limited, causing its price to spike to as much as US$500 almost immediately after it was launched, making it at the time one of the world’s most expensive cards. Its value, however, soon returned to its true level after the rumor was debunked; however, it had already built up a storied reputation.
