The Portuguese Football Federation Leaves Nike for PUMA
As one of the most high-profile teams in international football, the Portugal national team—led by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo—is a marquee addition to PUMA’s roster.
PUMA is making major moves in 2024, not just by launching standout products with strong collaborators, but also by securing headline-grabbing partnerships. The latest? A game-changing deal with the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF), marking the end of Nike’s nearly 30-year association with the team.
“Signing a top-tier national team was one of our priorities in football and I am very excited to welcome a team as popular as Portugal to the PUMA Family,” said PUMA CEO Arne Freundt in a press release. “Given the large number of fans all over the world and the great potential of the next generation of this squad, we are looking forward to the upcoming big tournaments such as the 2026 World Cup.”
As one of the most high-profile teams in international football, the Portugal national team—led by none other than Cristiano Ronaldo—is a marquee addition to PUMA’s roster. While the partnership’s duration hasn’t been disclosed, it’s set to kick off in 2025 as a long-term commitment. Starting next year, PUMA will provide kits for Portugal’s men’s and women’s national teams, as well as its futsal, beach football, and esports teams.
This isn’t PUMA’s first connection to Portuguese football. The brand previously collaborated with football legend Eusébio in the 1960s. Known as “O Rei” (The King), Eusébio inspired the iconic PUMA King football boots—a legacy that makes this reunion particularly meaningful.
Fernando Gomes, president of the FPF, highlighted PUMA’s ability to connect with fans and celebrate the unique identities of its partners. “We were attracted to PUMA because of the way in which they engage with the fans and tell the unique story of every team they work with,” Gomes said. “We look forward to creating an exciting range of products with them which will resonate with our large fan base all over the world.”
Fans won’t have to wait too long to see what’s next. PUMA has teased that new products and more details about the partnership will be unveiled in early 2025.
