SNKRDUNK Sneaker of the Year 2024 Nominees
Sixteen of 2024's best releases. A list with consideration not only for aesthetics, but concept and cultural context.
Curating a list of the year’s most significant releases is no walk in the park, narrowing down thousands of shoes, the work of hundreds of people, to just a small select few. In the grand scheme of things, all lists are subjective—which, ultimately, is the perfect climate for friendly discourse.
Having extensively explored them within the pages of SNKRDUNK Magazine throughout 2024, a select few have emerged as the most compelling. Our choices, informed by reader engagement, reflect a balance of aesthetic appeal, concept, context, and cultural cache. Though personal preferences inevitably influence such lists, the team has endeavored to employ a data-driven approach to ensure a degree of objectivity in our selection process.
This year’s nominees may be vastly different from last year’s, but there are a few returning ones, including (of course) Travis Scott and new ones like PUMA, who managed to execute their gambit to the surprise of many. So, without further ado, here are the nominees for…
Sneaker of the Year 2024
▪ Futura Laboratories x Nike SB Dunk Low “White and Geode Teal”
SKU: HF6061-400
Release Date: 22 May 2024
It’s been one of the quietest years for the Dunks since the “Panda”-monium in 2022. Nevertheless, they’re well-represented in 2024, and by who better than Futura, one of street culture’s most revered artists, one who has bridged and crossed over the worlds of fine art and street, one who has done work with the white walls of the gallery and the brick walls of the streets.
This is a worthy successor to his commissioned work on the legendary D.U.N.K.L.E.. It’s easily one of the most unique colorways ever, and it’s quintessentially Futura. With or without his branding on the heel, it’s easy to tell whose work it is. Lastly, his longevity, a five-decade-strong career, is unparalleled. Expect these to grow even more in prestige in the coming years.
▪ Kith x Marvel x ASICS GT-2160 “Spider-Man & Venom”
SKU: 1203A660-DBSPVN
Release Date: 9 Aug 2024
Kith and ASICS’ collaborations are a constant point of interest for sneakerheads, and this latest release, featuring two iconic Marvel Comics characters, has undoubtedly captured the attention of those who are as passionate about sneakers as they are about superhero films.
The exclusive double-box set, complete with a limited-edition comic book, an oversized collectible card, and premium packaging, underscores why certain sneakers are meant to be collected, not just worn (though, of course, they’re more than wearable too).
▪ Travis Scott x Nike Air Jordan 1 Low OG SP “Reverse Olive”
SKU: DM7866-200
Release Date: 28 Sep 2024
The AJ1 silhouette is synonymous with the best Travis Scott x Nike collabs, and the “Reverse Olive” continues this trend with its muted palette that’s unmistakably Travis Scott. Travis Scott has had another banner year, headlining ComplexCon and achieving the highest-grossing solo rap tour ever. His signature design elements, such as the reverse Swoosh and Cactus Jack branding, further elevate the sneaker’s desirability and its cultural impact.
▪ Travis Scott x Nike Jordan Jumpman Jack TR “Sail and Dark Mocha”
SKU: FZ8117-100
Release Date: 30 Apr 2024
Travis Scott. Is there much else that should be said about why this is on the list? Forget the Midas touch, La Flame sets any project he’s on aflame. Call it the Travis touch. And that includes shoes.
Perhaps the most compelling reason as to why this might be the sneaker of the year is that it’s a high-end shoe that’s versatile. The Travis Scott x Nike Jordan Jumpman Jack TR “Sail and Dark Mocha” isn’t as low as a low-top, but neither is it as high as a mid.
That sweet spot allows it to be worn with virtually any outfit, and for a hardcore fan, even with a suit on their big day. It’s a shoe that can be worn dressed up just as much as it can be worn casually. It’s practically a chameleon.
Of course, bolstering the versatility department is the pair’s pastel-earthy color palette. Virtually any color outfit can be matched with this sneaker. Oh yeah, and think about the attention these kicks would get wherever you roam. Because, again—Travis Scott. ‘Nuff said.
▪ Air Jordan 3 Retro OG “Black Cement”
SKU: DN3707-010
Release Date: 22 Nov 2024
This is the only one on the list heavily supported by its narrative. Compared to its successors, some may find its design archaic or unimpressive. However, for the initiated, this pair is an absolute grail and played a significant role in the birth of sneaker culture as we know it.
If not for the Air Jordan 3, Michael Jordan would not have continued with Nike, and we would have lived in a completely different timeline where adidas and Converse may still be the most dominant brand in the sport. (To be fair, it would be interesting to see.) The “Black Cement” is also one of the AJ3’s OG colorways, having been worn by His Airness during the 1988 All-Star game and campaign spots with Spike Lee.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and this one is as pretty to us then as it is now. Surprisingly, every sneaker aficionado and YouTube channel expected these to sell out and be one of the year’s most anticipated releases, but surprisingly, no and no (they’re still available for retail at the time of writing). Whether its hype has died down or not, it’s a win for the true fans who genuinely love the pair and the collectors—and ultimately, sneaker culture. Go get yours!
▪ CLOT x adidas Gazelle by Edison Chen “Linen Khaki/Light Blue”
SKU: IH3641
Release Date: 12 Aug 2024
While we’ve seen various interpretations of the adidas Gazelle, Edison Chen’s CLOT introduces a fresh take on the iconic model.
Featuring a jute-like khaki upper, nubuck overlays, an espadrille-inspired sole, and blue beaded three-stripes, every detail showcases a unique yet intriguing approach to design. This slim-profile silhouette contrasts with the current oversized footwear trend, offering a refreshing option for one’s Summer rotation.
▪ KITH x Marvel Super Villains × ASICS GT-2160 “Green Goblin”
SKU: 1203A660-100
Release Date: 8 Aug 2024
The KITH × Marvel Super Villains × ASICS GT-2160 “Green Goblin” perfectly encapsulates the nostalgic spirit of the ‘90s and early 2000s with a contemporary twist. Amidst Kith’s numerous collaborations, this collection stands out, seamlessly merging the menacing aesthetic of the iconic Green Goblin, with the comfort and performance of ASICS’ GT-2160 silhouette.
The sneaker’s vibrant color palette, premium materials, and intricate detailing capture the essence of the villainous character, while ASICS technology ensures a comfortable and responsive ride. This sneaker not only appeals to sneaker collectors but also resonates with Marvel fans, making it a highly coveted and culturally relevant release.
▪ Action Bronson x New Balance 1906R “Medusa Azúl”
SKU: M1906RON
Release Date: 21 Jun 2024
Action Bronson has come a long way from his humble beginnings as a chef and budding rapper. Today, he has a mini-empire going for himself—a well-deserved one we might add. A core pillar in said empire is his beloved partnership with New Balance, which has resulted in the birth of many a beautiful pair. Among them stands the magnum opus—the 1906R “Medusa Azúl”.
Layers of texture and color playfully intertwine, elements that accurately capture Bam Bam’s personality. Bold, loud, entertaining, and somehow balanced. Clearly, the Boston-based brand gave the New York City rapper full creative reign on the pair. And for that, we say, thank you.
▪ PEACEMINUSONE x Nike Air Force 1 Low “Para-noise 3.0”
SKU: AQ3692-004
Release Date: 16 Sep 2024
Everybody’s waited for a sequel since G-Dragon dropped the original Para-noises years ago. Thus, when these were leaked online early this year, they instantly sounded on many people’s radars. As expected, they were difficult to acquire. Deservedly so. This PMO x AF1 has been one of the most creative iterations of the classic, showing how collaborations are supposed to be—more than just a mere stamp of a logo or embossment on the heel.
No matter how many have taken on the pair, G-Dragon still surprised us. But that’s to be expected from one of the world’s most enigmatic and intuitively creative artists (even beyond K-pop), in the same vein as savants like David Bowie and Michael Jackson. We’re talking from a genuine multi-hyphenate whose output involves music, fashion, and fine art. Read: “Nothing but a ‘G’ Thang: The Art & Archive of G-Dragon”.
▪ Junya Watanabe MAN x New Balance 1906L “Black”
SKU: U1906LCD
Release Date: 18 Oct 2024
Hybrid sneaker designs are on the rise, and Junya Watanabe takes the trend to the next level. By reimagining New Balance’s fusion of the retro running-inspired 1906R and the sleek tassel loafer, Watanabe introduces a luxurious twist.
The smooth leather upper replaces traditional materials, while the full black colorway enhances its smart-casual appeal with a modern edge. Why settle for dressing up or down, when you can have the best of both worlds?
▪ Stone Island x New Balance 991V2 Ghost “Military Green”
SKU: U991SC2
Release Date: 26 Sep 2024
Stone Island has long been associated with football culture, and with the sport’s growing popularity, it’s no surprise that the Stone Island × New Balance 991V2 Ghost “Military Green” is a strong contender for Sneaker of the Year. The recent resurgence of Oasis, a band closely associated with Stone Island, has further elevated the brand’s popularity.
This collaboration seamlessly merges Stone Island’s innovative fabric technology with New Balance’s iconic 991 silhouette. The “Military Green” colorway, inspired by Stone Island’s Ghost collection, offers a sophisticated and understated look. The use of premium materials, meticulous craftsmanship, and attention to detail elevate this sneaker to a new level, making it a true standout in the world of footwear for this year.
▪ JJJJound x adidas Originals Samba Tobacco “Mesa/Gum”
SKU: ID8709
Release Date: 25 Jun 2024
Sambas typically come in leather—one of the primary differences between it and its Terrace shoe counterparts like the Gazelle and Spezial. Not this one, though. It’s draped in suede causing it to stand out from its Samba siblings immediately.
Then, there are the tonal differences between each shade of brown chosen for the respective sections on the pair, which adds depth to the monochromatic palette. Canadian imprint JJJJound’s branding is kept minimal, with subtle gold lettering on the lateral side and branding on the tongue, thereby staying true to the Tobacco’s pedigree.
Perhaps the loudest element of the JJJJound x adidas Originals Samba Tobacco is who they got to endorse it—Fenerbahçe manager José Mourinho, also known as “the special one”. Seeing him rock a pair with the accompanying apparel makes this collaboration a special one indeed.
If it’s good enough for Mourinho, it’s good enough to make this list.
▪ Trophy Room x Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Sail and Varsity Red”
SKU: FN0432-100
Release Date: 21 Mar 2024
Perhaps the first hype release of the year, the Trophy Room x Air Jordan 1 Low OG “Sail and Varsity Red,” arrived in March, setting the tone for subsequent releases. Sure, the pair still sold out but perhaps Trophy Room has damaged their reputation significantly with the backdooring controversy in the last release. Still, it’s an interesting concept well-executed, taking inspiration from a Michael Jordan rookie card. The mix of materials is also an interesting combo.
▪ PUMA Speedcat OG “All Time Red/PUMA White”
SKU: 398846-02
Release Date: 17 Oct 2024
2024 has been a landmark year for PUMA, driven by the Speedcat OG. Backed by stars like Rihanna, Dua Lipa, and BLACKPINK’s Rosé, the sneaker has joined the ranks of icons like the Nike Dunk Low and adidas Samba.
Tapping into the current wave of nostalgia and motorsport-inspired trends, the Speedcat OG bridges retro aesthetics with modern streetwear sensibilities. Its bold red upper and race-inspired silhouette make it a standout addition to any outfit, even the simplest ones.
▪ Corteiz x Nike Air Trainer Huarache “Light Bone”
SKU: FQ8793-002
Release Date: 22 Nov 2024
Clint Ogbenna has had a big year so far. After teasing a potential Air Max 95 collab and getting into a feud with PALACE for ripping off his BRASIL OLYMPIC SHUKU design, his brand, Corteiz, released a trio of Nike Air Trainer Huaraches to close out the year. The “Light Bone” colorway, in particular, had the most exclusive and interesting release of the year, with those who wanted a pair having to complete the challenging MANNY MAZE Challenge, a UK-exclusive release that added to the sneaker’s exclusivity.
The collaboration seamlessly merges Corteiz’s edgy streetwear aesthetic with Nike’s iconic Huarache silhouette, resulting in a truly distinctive sneaker. Additionally, the limited release and high demand further contribute to its status as a coveted and sought-after sneaker, solidifying its position as a top contender for the coveted title.
▪ Nike Dunk High “Wu-Tang” (2024)
SKU: HJ4320-001
Release Date: 9 Nov 2024
This bad boy’s a heavy hitter. The ultra-rare shoe that first saw the light of day in 1999 has finally returned after a quarter century. Only 100 pairs were released back then, so one can understand why the Wu-Tang Dunk is considered a grail for so many.
Unlike some of the other shoes dropping in the market today, this one doesn’t require you to be part of the gens du monde. It’s simple, straightforward, and easy to understand. It’s a salt-of-the-earth sneaker dressed with the Clan’s signature black-and-yellow color palette, and adorned with their emblem on the lateral heels and tongues. Tasteful yet impactful branding? Check.
The Wu-Tang Dunk’s appeal isn’t hidden behind the use of clever materials or avant-garde design language. Nay, all that’s required is an appreciation for the group’s cultural cache. Bonus points if you grew up banging the Clan, but, even if you didn’t, just a simple Google search on their storied past will add so much more to this iconic pair’s appeal.
If you managed to get to this part of the article, you’re one of the first to know that you might have a chance to win one of the pairs. Stay tuned to this very page!
