[Pokémon TCG] Pikachu (Dream League [SM11b] 054/049) [Release Date/Price/Where To Buy]
A throwback to where it all began.
Seventh-generation Pokémon TCG set Dream League [SM11b] is generally regarded as one of the most highly-rated of its era in large part due to its Full Art illustrations. This is because many of the cards in the set with Full Art illustrations come in the rarity of Character Rare (CHR) which depicts the Pokémon alongside its Trainer from the Pokémon canon—such as this Pikachu card.
About Pikachu (Dream League [SM11b] 054/049)
The most obvious thing to notice upon first looking at this card is the Trainer who’s shown on it. It’s none other than Red—the very first protagonist of the Pokémon video games and one of the most iconic video game characters of all time. Red’s presence alone on this card makes it a major pull.
The scene depicted on the card is taken directly from the opening sequences of Pokémon Yellow when Red receives a Pikachu as his starter Pokémon from Professor Oak’s Laboratory. It would be this same Pikachu which would go on to become Red’s most iconic Pokémon, ultimately serving as his most powerful ‘mon when the player battles his team at the climax of Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal as well as HeartGold and SoulSilver, their remakes.
The nostalgia factor is unquestionably in play as well—for those who were into Pokémon from day one, Red would’ve been their first exposure to the series. Finally, the fact that it’s Pikachu plays a role in generating demand for the card as well; after all, it’s the face of the entire Pokémon franchise.
