[Pokémon TCG] The Palkia VSTAR/Terapagos ex Deck Takes Full Advantage of an Expanded Bench
A new deck that doesn't include Dusknoir? Yes, such a thing does, in fact, exist.
[Update 22 Nov 2024] A new variant of this deck which has recently emerged makes use of the Jet Energy card from Triplet Beat [SV1a]. This card allows the player to bring a Benched Pokémon into the Active Spot by being attached to that Pokémon; it’s normally played in the early game to bring in a Pokémon which will help the player with setup or disrupt that of the opponent.
Two decks which have recently arrived as key players in the Pokémon TCG metagame are the Palkia VSTAR/Dusknoir and Terapagos ex/Dusknoir decks—just two of the many decks which make use of the incredible Dusknoir card from Night Wanderer [SV6a]. However, another option which has emerged fairly recently is the Palkia VSTAR/Terapagos ex deck which uses the main non-Dusknoir ‘mons from those other two decks; it’s already begun to have an impact in tournament play.
Strategy
The Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR card from Space Juggler [S10P] is the deck’s main attacker. Powered up by Area Zero Underdepths, a Stadium card from Stellar Miracle [SV7], Origin Forme Palkia VSTAR’s Subspace Swell attack can hit for up to 220 damage for just two Water Energy cards even if the opponent doesn’t have any Benched Pokémon—and even more if the opponent does. This could set up situations in which the opponent’s most powerful multi-Prize Pokémon can be taken out with just one use of Subspace Swell.
Even when the opponent is able to avoid being one-shotted by Subspace Swell in the early game, it would usually be the case that to make that possible, the opponent would have to overcommit resources to do so and hand an advantage to the player. Cards such as Bravery Charm from Clay Burst [SV2D] and V Guard Energy from Incandescent Arcana [S11a] often have to be deployed by opponents just to survive the attack.
In the event that Subspace Swell isn’t enough to pick up the KO, Terapagos ex from Stellar Miracle [SV7] and Radiant Greninja from Battle Region [S9a] can come in to finish the job. Terapagos ex also benefits from Area Zero Underdepths—thanks to the Stadium card, Terapagos ex is able to unleash up to 240 damage with its Unified Beatdown attack.
Price
The total price of all the cards in the Origin Palkia VSTAR/Terapagos ex Deck is at least 13,400 JPY (~US$87).
