It's not often that a Pokémon TCG card references the manga.

Pokémon TCG Green's Exploration

When Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the third-generation remakes of first-generation main-series video games Pokémon Red and Blue, were released in 2004, one of the most notable additions to the revamped versions was a female protagonist; the original Red and Blue versions only had a male one. Green, the female protagonist in question, unsurprisingly proved to be highly popular and eventually ended up on one of the biggest pulls of the seventh generation of the Pokémon TCG.

About Green’s Exploration (Tag All Stars [SM12a] 196/173)

This card features a Full Art illustration depicting Green alongside Squirtle, her starter Pokémon. This is a direct reference to the Pokémon manga; in the video games, Green does not have a set starter as she is a possible player character. However, in the manga, Green’s starter is indeed Squirtle. This adds further appeal to fans who got into Pokémon via the manga as well as a touch of novelty, since the manga isn’t commonly referenced in the TCG.

Since this card has a Full Art illustration of a female character, it shouldn’t be surprising that the card has accumulated quite a bit of value. It also has a rarity of Super Rare (SR); on top of that, there’s a nostalgia factor in play in two ways. For one thing, Green’s original video game appearance came two decades ago. In addition, Green’s addition to FireRed and LeafGreen greatly appealed to female players who played Red and Blue but were not adequately represented due to the lack of a female player character back then.
