[SNKRDUNK Streetsnaps] Rise of The Sneakers: The Playground 2024
A photographic chronicle of Rise of The Sneakers: The Playground 2024, held in Batam from 1 to 4 August.
Street culture, merely a localized phenomenon in the few decades prior, has metastasized into a global behemoth. Its reach, once confined to urban epicenters like New York, Tokyo, and London, now reverberates across continents, reshaping industries and lifestyles in its wake. Even its most enlightened founding fathers like Shawn Stussy, James Jebbia, and Hiroshi Fujiwara, could scarcely have envisioned the far-reaching impact of their creations.
Under the imposing influence of established brands, a fertile undergrowth of independent ones has flourished. This burgeoning ecosystem is omnipresent, from the bustling metropolises to the most remote corners of the globe. The Indonesian archipelago too, often overlooked in the grand narrative of sneakers and streetwear, has emerged as a microcosm.
Batam stands as a testament to this diffusion. The boomtown’s Rise of The Sneakers convention, a celebration of independent vendors from the Indonesia-Malaysia-Singapore Growth Triangle, is fuelled by nothing more than pure, potent passion and an entrepreneurial spirit.
Although modest in comparison to its larger counterparts, the event offered a glimpse into the future of streetwear on a global scale. This year’s iteration showcased a dynamic program featuring panel discussions, emerging brands, community-building competitions, and family-friendly activities, underscoring the inclusive nature of this cultural movement.
Vendor booths have emerged as captivating focal points at sneaker conventions, meticulously crafted to immerse attendees in a world of visual storytelling. Recognizing the power of first impressions, exhibitors have elevated booth design to an art form.
Exemplifying this is the Rise of The Sneakers administrative booth, evoking the nostalgia of a bygone era through its transformation into a thoughtfully curated sports locker room. Rusty lockers, vintage footwear, trophies, and retro advertisements collectively transported visitors to a treasured time in sneaker culture.
They also marked their foray into merchandise with a debut collection, their sales booth design reminiscent of a teenager’s bedroom. Features included bedsheets adorned with the iconic imagery of Chelsea F.C.’s Mourinho era, a PlayStation 2 console, and a rare KAWS Companion model.
Singapore’s Suave Cartel Supply also unveiled their “Good Food Co.” capsule, comprising a range of short and long-sleeved t-shirts, a tote bag, and a lighter pack.
Not to be outdone, Embrace from Tanjong Pinang, presented a compelling activation featuring a fingerboard skatepark, complemented by a skateboard deck and a classic vintage bicycle.
Notable among the other captivating displays was Morning Monday‘s beach-themed booth, adorned with sand, seashells, a beach chair, and a cooler, evoking a coastal paradise.
The event showcased an array of sartorial choices, with attendees and vendors alike adopting a polished aesthetic. Given the equatorial climate, t-shirts emerged as the predominant attire. Still, fashion often triumphs over function, as evidenced by the numerous individuals who layered their ensembles despite the oppressive heat.
Completing the scene were a diverse selection of footwear, ranging from regional gems such as Malaysia’s Water The Plant to special collaborations by SBTG and Kanky Sportstyle Kitadake. Sought-after releases from previous years also graced the event, including the sacai x Nike Zoom Cortez “Iron Grey”, the Concepts x Nike Air Max 1 “Heavy”, and the JJJJound x Reebok Classic Nylon “Grey”.
While intimate in scale, this year’s Rise of The Sneakers brought together a community imbued with a passion equal to any other in the world. The event served as a microcosm of the global street culture phenomenon, offering a glimpse into its burgeoning potential.
