[ONE PIECE Card Game] The Purple Luffy Deck Has Majorly Benefited From Meta Changes
This deck doesn't even include any new cards—but the introduction of those cards changed the meta in a way that tipped the scales in this deck's favor.
[Update 2 Oct 2024] The new variant of the Purple Luffy deck has now emerged as a leading tournament deck. The deck’s new additions, when paired with the deck’s Leader card, create a deck that’s seldom prone to bricking while also usually putting much early pressure on the opponent.
[Update 12 Sep 2024] The release of Emperors in the New World [OP-09] has given rise to a new variant of this deck including two new support options: Gum-Gum Giant and Trafalgar Law. Gum-Gum Giant serves as a draw engine which also adds 4000 Power to either the deck’s Leader card or any Character card in play. Trafalgar Law is a searcher which enables important Character cards to be brought out sooner.
In January and February 2024, the Purple Luffy deck was one of the most dominant in the ONE PIECE Card Game metagame. That deck was a consistent top performer at tournaments around the world; however, meta changes triggered by new set releases caused the Purple Luffy deck to fall off significantly soon after. And, with the recent release of Two Legends [OP-08], the meta has once again shifted so as to make this deck viable. Recently, Indonesian player Ricco Kurniawan scored a Flagship Battle tournament victory with this deck, proving that it’s back as a leading option.
The most important cards of this deck’s strategy are the Eustass Kid card from Awakening of the New Era [OP-05] which powers up the deck’s Leader card, the Monkey D. Luffy card from the same set; the Paulie card from Pillars of Strength [OP-03] which assists with DON!! ramping while also picking up easy KO’s on opposing low-cost Characters, and the Trafalgar Law card from The Three Captains [ST-10] which disrupts the opponent’s strategy by forcing the opponent to discard two cards from the hand if the opponent has seven or more cards in hand.
It’s also important to maximize the counter cards in this deck. There aren’t many of them because of the power-up granted to the Leader cards; however, they’re still necessary in order to ensure a higher level of survivability. The deck also includes a combo utilizing the Ulti and Page One cards from Animal Kingdom Pirates [ST-04] to serve as a counterplay to Yellow Enel and Black Lucci decks.
This deck’s most difficult matchup is the Black/Yellow Luffy deck. First off, when playing against this deck, it’s better for the Purple Luffy deck player to go second. The player should start by inflicting significant damage early on, then follow that up by swinging again without any DON!! attached. Cards to prioritize when playing against that deck are the aforementioned Kid card as well as the Kaidou card from Animal Kingdom Pirates [ST-04] because of their high damage output that forces the opponent to use up many cards to fend them off.
Buying every card in a Purple Luffy deck has a cumulative cost of at least 36,420 JPY (~US$234).
