Even Lee’s ’80s classic Do The Right Thing immortalized the shoes with the infamous line: “You stepped on my brand new Air Jordans!” This enduring partnership culminated in the 2006 Jordan Spiz’ike.

But Lee’s love for Jordans isn’t limited to behind the camera. He’s just as passionate in front of it, even resurrecting Mars Blackmon for Nike’s 50th anniversary campaign. This mutual respect reached its peak with the exclusive Spike Lee x Nike Air Jordan 3 Retro “Gold Oscars” PE, which Lee donned at the 2019 Oscars, where his film BlacKkKlansman was nominated for six awards.

Premium metallic gold leather engulfs the entire upper, highlighting the signature elephant print and unique Swooshes. Disparate branding on the heel places Lee’s 40 Acres and A Mule Filmworks logo with an oversized Jumpman on the other pair, a testament to their enduring partnership.

While never officially released, these “Gold Oscars” AJ3 will now be up for auction with an interesting backstory: A participant in Portland Rescue Mission’s program, an organization supporting the homeless and battling addiction since 1949, found the pristine pair in a donation bin. Nike legend Tinker Hatfield himself then authenticated the shoes, expressing his delight at their unexpected journey.

Sotheby’s will host the auction, ensuring 100% of the proceeds go back to The Portland Rescue Mission. Bidding for the regal Spike Lee x Nike Air Jordan 3 Retro “Gold Oscars” PE runs until 18 December, with an estimated value between US$15,000 and US$20,000.
