“Everything that’s old is one day new again,” announces adidas on its website. The German shoemaker is referring specifically to a pair of sneakers that it’s named the “Mexicana Prototype” and which it is launching in a few days.

The adidas Mexicana Prototype may look familiar, and that is because it is one of the early prototype designs for the adidas Gazelle and adidas did release a line of Mexicana shoes back in the 70s. In recent years, with retro sneakers experiencing a resurgence, a few versions of the OG Mexicana were reissued too.

But, this time around, the Three Stripes are throwing it back all the way to the 1960s. As the name “Mexicana Prototype” goes, this “new” sneaker predates the OG Mexicana. While you will find the similar details like the Three Stripes, toe bumper and textured rubber sole unit, the Mexicana Prototype comes with an unfinished silver foil at the heel without the model name “Mexicana”.

Similarly, on the tongue, the sewn-on blue adidas tongue label appears with an empty space below that’s intentionally left blank. The design concept for the Mexicana Prototype was before the Trefoil logo was created, hence the absence of it.

With the adidas Mexicana Prototype, adidas is keeping up with its celebration of Mexican culture. This vivid green colorway drops on 24 February with a US$135 price tag. Follow along for more updates.
