Neighborhood x Katharine Hamnett’s Nonviolent Resistance
Messages still relevant in today's political climate.
Katharine Hamnett’s championed many things in her three-decade career as a fashion designer. Her eponymous brand established in 1979, arguably invented the ubiquitous slogan t-shirt, printing over them political messages in large block type, intentionally made to be oft-imitated so that they can transcend their original sphere of influence.
For the second time, she’s brings her artistic acumen to the table with Japanese streetwear fixture, Neighborhood. Consider it their sophomore effort having first worked together through the latter’s LUKER sub-label. The collaboration will combine the spirit and essence of both brands through a 10-piece monochromatic collection of MA-1 bomber jackets, shirts, sweatshirts, long and short-sleeved tees, along with clothing accessories such as a knit cap, and a logo muffler.
Save for the shirts, a custom dual-branded tag accompanied by “AUTUMN/WINTER ’22” traverses through the pieces in the collection. Branding elements are kept obscure for most of them in the outerwear department. Among the t-shirt offerings however, Katharine Hamnett’s signature takes to the fore with political locutions like “STAY ALIVE IN 94”, “NO WAR”, and “CLEAN UP OR DIE”.
The collection will go live on 15th October in Neighborhood’s brick-and-click as well as select dealers. The price point varies through the different offerings. The MA-1 bomber jacket will go for ¥66,000 (≈US$451); the shirt ¥48,400 (≈US$331); sweatshirts ¥29,700 (≈US$203); t-shirts between ¥8,800 (≈US$60) to ¥9,900 (≈US$68); lastly, the knit cap and logo muffler will go for ¥13,200 (≈US$90) and ¥14,300 (≈US$98).
