Almost three decades since its debut, the Nike Air More Uptempo continues to see new iterations and colorways; transcending its basketball origin, to becoming a sui generis in the lifestyle realm. Although its claim to fame in the pop culture sphere is by being on Scottie Pippen’s feet during the 1995-96 NBA season, this retrofitting reminds us that it all started with one Wilson Smith, Nike’s first African-American designer.

Having been with the Swoosh since the early ’80s, some of his other notable work include the Air Max CB34 and the Air Jordan 16 and 17. While his design DNA will always be imbedded within his Air More Uptempo brainchild, this time, that connection literally comes to the surface.

The commemorative pair retains almost all of its design elements, save for its most character-defining feature: the oversized “AIR”, being replaced with its maker’s first name wrapping around its lateral side and medial highlighted by a white border.

The existence of the pair is becoming more of enigmatic having been spotted on the wall racks of various Nike Outlets, with a few sample pairs surfacing on eBay. There’s no word about a release date yet, nor an official release for that matter, at the time of writing but from what we know about human nature, people love a mystery.
