Shaquille O’Neal stands at 7’1″ with a size 20 feet, and size 22 shoes. One small step for Shaq is one giant leap for mankind. He was the biggest player in every way: on the court, in business, in life. His accolades throughout his playing days deserves its own Wikipedia page the way Scorsese does his filmography. Today, he’s a comedic basketball analyst and owner of over 200 burger joints and gym franchises.

As a 20-year old in 1992, the young Diesel signed with Reebok as the brand’s first-ever signature athlete. It only took four months from the shoe to be plucked from the ether and manifested into an actual NBA game. No pressure for Judy Close, the woman who designed the shoes who funnily, has a waist line about the width of Shaq’s thighs.

Aside from dominating in the NBA, the other thing Shaq knew how to do was have fun, making him a machine for the Orlando Magic, and a machine for marketers. It’s not hard to find a 7-footer doing popping moves if you just type the mononym.

The original Shaq Attaq samples were made in size 9, and a size 20 just to make sure the design elements would still work on a bigger canvas. Even then, Shaq wore a size 22. When he was younger, he couldn’t afford to get proper shoes so he always wore his shoes tighter. These incoming pairs however, would probably come in average joe sizes.

Making a return 30 years later, the Reebok Shaq Attaq OG, a legacy shoe with a pedigree of casting shadows over its contemporaries, will have its time in the sun again. The silhouette was the first Reebok pair to integrate a speed lacing system and a carbon fiber footplate on the outsole and it remains present in its second coming. It’s a maximalist pair typical of its epoch with its azure anodized synthetic collar, dual-footlocking system by was of orthodox laces, and the signature Pump. An performance shoe with as much razzmatazz as its namesake off the court.
