Spotting the New Balance 550s is an easy feat these days, especially given its trendy status among influencers and sneakerheads alike. However, the model’s debut in 1989 was actually not as well received, with it falling into obscurity in the 90s. It was not until Teddy Santis, the Creative Director of New Balance’s Made in USA line, discovered it in 2018 did the model have a rebirth.

Santis’ penchant for the lesser-known silhouettes meant that he was set on making crowds love the New Balance 550 again, and that he did with the wildly successful Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance “International Friendship Through Basketball” collection.

And now, the brand wants you to fall in love with the New Balance 550 again with a heart-themed colorway up for grabs. Dubbed the New Balance 550 “Valentine’s Day”, this new iteration sees a perforated white leather upper overlayed with gentle pink suede. Burgundy red accents are found on the heel, lining the lip of the tongue and tracing the puffed N logo. Driving the Valentine’s Day message are heart graphics that decorate the heel and insoles. The shoe rounds out with a mix of red and pink on the outsole while the midsole has the classic Santis “aged” look.

This women exclusive New Balance 550 Valentine’s Day has actually made its debut on UK-based retailer Zalando, but is currently out of stock. Given the name, though, it is likely a wider release will drop next year for Valentine’s Day.
