“BORING.” reads Tom Sach’s latest Instagram post on his latest NikeCraft collaboration, “Your sneakers shouldn’t be the most exciting thing about you. They are tools, and what matters about your tools is that they work.”

That is the mantra that characterises the NikeCraft General Purpose Shoe (GPS), the newest addition to Nike and Tom Sach’s 10 years of partnership. The collaborative spirit between the sports giant and the contemporary artist was always geared towards new perspectives, and the GPS is the culmination of such efforts.

“I got involved with Nike in the beginning because we wanted to make a sculpture that everyone could wear. It’s a tool for everyday life; it’s democratic,” — Tom Sachs

Shifting our focus to the sneaker a daily tool, the GPS is a functional piece that is technically detailed. The engineering and materials were specially chosen to maximise the tactile sensation of comfort and support. However, this dedication to comfort does not neglect utility and durability. The intricate upper material is open enough for ventilation yet tight enough such that contact with water would not destroy it. The shoe’s build is also distinctly crafted for functionality with a three-piece molded cup sole, microfiber collar and ultra-breathable knit. Giving the silhouette a distinguishing quality is its slightly upturned toe.

Understated and simple, the GPS does as its name suggests. It’s supposed to be the perfect companion for any activity and durable to withstand wear and tear. For Sachs, the every day movement within this sneaker is the process of art creation: every stain, tear and repair lends a unique quality to the sneaker and becomes a piece that connects to our individual experiences.

In this way, then, the NikeCraft GPS is “boring” on purpose. Our utilisation of the shoe colours its blank, unused canvas to one that tells the story of our everyday movements and encounters. The NikeCraft GPS will be available on NikeCraft.com and retails at USD$109.99.
