Givenchy’s Matthew Williams Reunites with Nike for Nike Zoom MMW 5 “Black” and “Gray” Clog
Matthew Williams' latest collaboration with Nike, Nike Zoom MMW 5, is a pair of foam slides for the 1017 ALYX 9SM SS23 runway.
[Update 29 May 2023] Looks like we are finally seeing a release of the Nike Zoom MMW 5 Slide “Volt”. Slated to drop on 9 June, the pair will be made available alongside a new “Dark Khaki” colorway. Retail price is set at $190 per pair.
[Update 14 Sep 2022] Contrary to the updates given earlier, it seems like the Matthew Williams clogs will be coming sooner rather than later. For those who’ve been holding out, breathe easy. They’re already available on 1017 ALYX 9SM since 9th September with an upcoming release on SNKRS set for 23rd September.
[Update 28 Jul 2022] A new colourway, “Volt” has been confirmed with the release of official photos! Sources also suggest that rather than releasing in 2023, the Nike Zoom MMW 5 clogs might drop as early as Fall/Winter 2022! Scroll for photos of this new colourway.
[Update 20 Jun 2022] Now officially dubbed the Nike Zoom MMW 5, the slip-on made its appearance on the 1017 ALYX 9SM Spring/Summer 2023 Milan show. There, a new gray colorway was unveiled to audiences. Unlike the all-black iteration, this gray-dominated Nike Zoom MMW 5 has a yellowed white midsole. Metallic silver detailing also appears on the midsole, giving the gray edition more embellishments than its black counterpart.
Though no release dates have dropped, the Spring/Summer 2023 show appearance suggests that the Nike Zoom MMW 5 will be made available in 2023. For more pictures provided by Matthew Williams via Instagram, keep scrolling!
Matthew Williams, Givenchy’s creative director and co-founder of fashion label 1017 ALYX 9SM, recently revealed a pair of black foam slides in an Instagram post. His caption indicates that the slides will make an appearance on 1017 ALYX 9SM’s SS23 runway show on 17 June.
Though not explicitly mentioned, keen eyes will notice a small, embossed Swoosh appearing beside MMW on the slide’s top. The shrinkage of Nike’s Swoosh for luxury collaborations seems to be a trend this summer, with Jacquemus adopting a similar mini Swoosh on their collaborative Nike Air Humara.
The carousel of photos showcase the black slip-ons from all angles, leaving the details up for our marvel. Most noticeably, patches of perforations on the top of the slides give the shoe a scale-like look when in movement, lending it a textural element that is often lost when foam is the base material. These holes continue on in the insole, following the ergonomic shape of the slides.
Similar to recent releases of slip-ons, the midsole sees larger, oval punctures that enhance the kinetic feel of the slides — an element we do not often associate with the lounge-appropriate shoe. Not much can be said about release or pricing details at the moment, but we expect it to enter the ready-to-wear market in 2023.
