QUICK LOOK:
One word comes to mind when we think of adidas’ releases this year: “fresh”. From successive collaborations with luxury fashion houses Gucci and Balenciaga, to the various iterations of Yeezys and even quirky and colourful collection with m&m’s, the Trefoil has made appearances with many new companions this year.
With the announcement of this new silhouette, the sportswear giant proves that its innovations does not only extend to outward collaborations, but also inwards in its offerings. Dubbed the Orketro, the fresh style takes inspiration from its 90s archive but reinvents it with futuristic elements that boasts technical updates.
A low-top body that enhances performance is imbued with futuristic, space-like visual cues: mesh uppers segmented by streaky leather overlays. Some have commented that this new design, with a “Bright Blue” base and striped “Carbon” tones, exudes Kiko Kostadinov’s iconic collaborations with Asics. The bottom is cushioned with adiPrene, allowing for absorption of impact and providing long-term support.
Aside from improved tech, the new silhouette’s design borrows from architectural ideology of Brutalism. The mid 20th-century style was characterised by its deliberate lack of embellishment, instead focusing on plain functionalism. The result was buildings that resembled large blocks of industrial concrete rather than grand architectural pieces with elaborate facades. Though such a design thinking stems from the era’s postwar housing needs, it has recently come into vogue for its minimalist look. Kanye West is a famous proponent, with his Yeezy Studio adopting such a concept.
The focus on functionality and an industrial look is apparent simply from looking at Orketro’s colourway and structure. Coupled with its enhanced tech, it is no wonder that the concept of brutalism is attached to this silhouette. adidas Orketro will be released on 1st June and will retail at USD$160.
